What we do

Horses. Art. Nature. Community. And, yes, black cats!
Black Cat Ranch is a nonprofit horse ranch in Elgin, Texas, supporting creativity, wellness, and human connection through equine experiences.
It’s place to slow down, make something, breathe, and reconnect.
Black Cat Ranch was created around a simple idea: people need places where they can step away from the noise of everyday life and just be.
Here, horses graze in the pasture, black cats wander around the ranch like they own the place (they really do), and people are invited to slow down for a while.
We bring horses, creativity, nature, and community together through experiences designed to encourage curiosity, connection, and a little more presence in our lives.
Throughout the year, we offer experiences designed to bring people together through horses, creativity, and wellness, including:
- Equine Life Drawing — slow down and draw alongside the horses
- Offline at the Ranch — phone-free time to journal, read, draw, groom horse or just hang out
- Yoga & Sound Baths — restorative experiences surrounded by horses and nature
- Artist & Writer Residencies — time and space for creative work in a rural setting
Some experiences are structured. Others are intentionally not.
You might come here to draw a horse, fill a journal page, meditate, read under a tree, meet a new friend, learn something new, or spend an hour brushing a horse without looking at your phone.
The Horses Are at the Heart of It
Horses have a remarkable way of bringing us into the present moment.
Around horses, there is very little room for pretense. They ask us to pay attention to them, to our surroundings, and to ourselves.
We think people need more spaces like that.
Creativity Belongs to Everyone
You don’t have to call yourself an artist to make something.
At Black Cat Ranch, creativity isn’t about being good at something. It’s about curiosity, experimentation, expression, and giving yourself permission to make without worrying about the outcome.
Come As You Are
Come draw. Come breathe. Come get your hands dirty. Put your phone away for a while. Brush a horse. Meet someone new. Make something strange. Sit quietly.
And don’t be surprised if a black cat wanders over to see what you’re up to.
The (side) Mission of Black Cat Rescue
We are dedicated to the protection, rehabilitation, and rehoming of (mostly) black cats, which are often overlooked in shelters.
Shelters are overpopulated. Black cats are often the last to be adopted, resulting in overcrowded shelters and higher euthanasia rates. Part of our mission is to ensure that all the black cats in our care receive the same love and opportunities as their more colorful counterparts till the day they find their furr-ever homes.
